If your age is 70 or above or you would soon be 70, do not forget to renew your British driving license. You must renew your driving license with the DVLA.

The DVLA (Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency) is a British Government agency. It was created in the year 1990 by the Department of Transport, and was founded to replace the aging DVLC (Driver & Vehicle Licensing Centre). The agency currently holds over 44 million valid driver’s licenses and 36 million licensed vehicles. Some of the key responsibilities of the DVLA include,

  • maintaining records of licensed drivers and registered vehicles
  • issuing licences to drivers and the maintenance of the vehicle driving entitlements
  • maintaining records of driver endorsements, disqualifications and medical conditions
  • issuing registration certificates to vehicle onwers
  • collecting and enforcing vehicle excise duty
  • helping the police and intelligence authorities deal with vehicle related crime
  • registering and issuing tachograph cards
  • issuing vehicle registration marks
  • selling attractive vehicle registration marks (also known as personalised registrations)
  • selling anonymised data
  • limiting vehicle tax evasion to no more than 1%

To renew your current driving license you would need to provide the DVLA with your address proof where you have been living for more than 3 years, and your National Insurance Number, your valid UK passport, and your email address.

DVLA would renew your driving license if you meet all the following conditions
